You Can Still Find A Good .COM Domain
If you ask pretty much anyone now a days, they will tell you that a good .com domain is impossible to get anymore but I say you can still get a good one, but you’ll have to put a bit of work into it.
Good Domain
A best possible domain follows 3 rules as much as possible. One, it is short (one or two words). Two, it is easy to remember. Three, it is relevant. Number three, however, can be replaced with alternative number three, which requires that the domain is brandable, but in this case it has to follow the first two rules.
Find Your Main Keyword
You want your domain to be relevant to your website as much as possible. To achieve this you will need to figure out what the main keyword should be. As an example I will pretend that I have a online store that will sell alarm clocks. For this website my main keyword will be “clock”.
Adding Descriptive Adjectives
Complimentary descriptive adjectives can be anything that describes your main keyword. In my case since I am selling alarm clocks, my complimentary words can be anything from “alarm” to “loud”.
Here is some examples of adjectives that can be used.
| swift | ancient | modern | bitter | sweet |
| tan | beige | chestnut | alert | attractive |
| sticky | fuzzy | giant | teeny | massive |
| careful | cheap | expensive | good | bad |
| bumpy | cool | few | rainy | solid |
| cotton | crystal | round | square | triangular |
| sore | dangerous | safe | combative | weary |
| dull | drab | dim | aggressive | mellow |
| fancy | excited | scared | filthy | superior |
| lazy | excited | hungry | crazy | sane |
| new | fresh | yellow | red | blue |
| average | graceful | plain | unusual | light |
| purple | green | wooden | plastic | woolen |
| soft | hard | harsh | melodic | whispering |
| puny | harsh | noisy | quiet | shrill |
| hollow | low | wide | narrow | crooked |
| oval | octagonal | teak | oak | granite |
| pink | orange | brown | black | white |
| wrong | right | poor | rich | busy |
| happy | sad | tired | alert | anxious |
| steep | shallow | fat | skinny | petite |
| cold | sharp | wet | dry | dusty |
| long | short | strong | weak | shy |
| big | small | large | tiny | miniscule |
| salty | sour | tart | delicious | hot |
| better | terrible | dead | alive | wild |
| huge | tremendous | young | old | elderly |
| handsome | ugly | beautiful | clear | shiny |
Alternatives
In some cases you can use off-the-wall combination of words that make no or little sense. The reason you would do this is if you just can not find any domains with the words that make sense or you want your domain and brand to stand out and to be memorable. Lots of times rhyming the words helps making the domain catchier. For example, with my word “clock” I could use a word like “clickclock”, “timeforadime”, etc. These are not very good but it gives you an idea.
Putting It Together & Checking Availability
If you do not have a huge budget for a domain, you will need to find out what domain are available before getting too attached to them.
Now if you do have a pile of cash available to purchase a domain that is not available but might be for sale you can always make the current owner an offer.
I find that if you want to get a good deal in pretty much anything you deal in, do not reveal your figure first. Let the other person tell you how much they want first. This is not always easy or comfortable but it does miracles. In my experience, most of the time the other person will want less than what you were going to offer.
So here is where we start, open up your browser to godaddy.com and check your main keyword first. Who knows, maybe by some chance it is available. If not, start going through the list of your adjectives and adding them to the keyword, checking availability of each one. Check all the variations you can come up with as long as it still makes sense.
You found one that is available!! Congratulations, but do not stop there. How many times I’ve found one that was available just to be amazed at what I found about half an hour later.
Secret Of Successful Domain Search
As you search, the results page will display suggestions below the search box in the Also Available tab. Scan your eyes through there every time not available comes up. This will give you more ideas to search for.
The secret is to keep searching. Don’t settle for something that you’re not completely happy with. Block off half an hour to one hour…what the heck, even two hours. Keep searching, non stop. building on ideas. Your creative mind will start working and you will find that awesome domain.
Do not be tempted to check the .NET, .ORG or .INFO. Keep your search in the .COM and you will find it.
Good Luck!
